“So now what?” Phoenix leans against the cold stone wall, shifting his weight from one leg to the other. His arms must be hurting but he doesn’t dare put Millie down. “Let me ask you something, Cecily. What good are these damn abilities if we can never get them to work when it really matters?” A weave of frustration and anxiety swirls around in his eyes. Cecily sighs and sets a bag that she’s been carrying on her shoulder on the ground.

“This mansion is so old and has a rich history of magic.” She places her palm flat on the wall and closes her eyes. “Hundreds of years of spells and enchantments within these very walls. The electricity still sings. I can hear it.” She hums quietly to herself. “I honestly have no idea why your gifts are suddenly blocked from this place, which is why it is imperative that we have to get out of here.” Her eyes fly open.

“I think she knows I’m here.” Lucious is leaning over my shoulder, his voice hushed in my ear. A shiver slinks its way up my spine.

“Eden, he’s here, right?” Cecily’s face goes white.

“What? Who’s here? Cesar?” Phoenix says, confused.

“You can’t see him? I think I was kind of hoping that you’d be able to see him, too. Make me feel a little less…crazy.” I answer, trying to buy some time. I’m not sure if I want to trust Lucious or not but if he hates Cesar as much as he says he does, maybe he can help us get out of here at the very least.

“No, I can’t see him but I can sense him. It’s strange, but it’s the same feeling I had as a child. Like it’s my father’s energy, not Cesar’s henchman.” She looks wistful, as if she’s pining for a past that she never truly had.

“I have a surprise for you.” Lucious smirks.

“I’m not really in the mood for any more surprises. As I’m sure you can see, I’ve had my fill for the day. For a lifetime, actually.” I nod toward Phoenix and Millie.

“Remember that favor that you asked me for? Well, I delivered.” He takes out the pocket watch, checks the time, and stuffs it back into his pouch.

“What’s with that anyway? The watch. Why do you even care about the time? Wait.”—I stop him before he can answer—“Don’t bother. I don’t really care. Just tell me why you popped in so we can get the hell out of here.” I walk over and stand next to Phoenix.

“Is it just me or is it a little wacky that she’s talking to the air?” Phoenix mumbles to Cecily.

She leans over to him. “It’s wacky all right, but what do you expect from this place?” She answers with a smirk. I nudge Phoenix in the ribs.

Lucious has shuffled over next to Cecily, overcome by a look of grief so powerful even the birds attached to his body are shedding their feathers like tears.

“She’s sick,” he observes.

“She’s fine.
